How To Be Happy  by eleanor davis This collection of graphic short stories is weird, wonderful and beautiful. The art is widely varied, from gorgeous, full-color painted spreads to quick pen-and-ink sketches. The stories range from the magical to the mythological to the real. Some are more like parables and others read like literary fiction. Theres a retelling of Adam and Eve, a story about a homecoming in a dystopian future, a realistic story about first love, and so much more. Its thoughtful, imaginative, and fresh. Abandon the Old in Tokyo by yoshihiro tatsumi In Abandon The Old In Tokyo, Tatsumi explores themes of ordinary urban life in post-WWII Japan. Its a dark, gritty book. The characters are often factory workers and other laborers, unemployed and living in poverty. Sometimes the stories are disturbing, and sometimes theyre just weird. In one story, a man loses his job and watches his life spiral out of control. In another, a man struggles to care for his aging mother. Theres a thread of desperation, loneliness, and alienation that runs through them all. Its a book about people  seeking solace and companionship, and what happens when they cannot find it. These stories werent exactly comfortable to read, but I found them captivating and honest. Throughout the collection, she incorporates the words of many famous thinkers, politicians, philosophers, and authors, which added depth and complexity to the essays. This is a thought-provoking book, one that asks many questions and leaves them open-ended. We All Wish for Deadly Force by leela corman This book includes a variety of short comicsâ€" memoir, cultural observations, and family historyâ€"all of them with gorgeous, haunting art. Corman writes eloquently and heartbreakingly about the death of her infant daughter. Her grief permeates the collection, and is especially poignant in the short, one-page comics about her daughters infancy. There are also fascinating comics about bellydancing and bellydancing culture in Egypt and New York and about her grandparents life in Poland before the war. The art is extraordinary. I found myself lingering on each page, soaking up the details. Meanwhile, leadership studies where battling each other with updates and innovations some people were unknowingly practicing spontaneous leadership styles not yet rated by scholars.These unrecognized practitioners were influencing family members, coworkers and church parishioners with a consistent behavior pattern that today I can associate with prevalent leadership theories and analyze it to define under a multidimensional (Bass Avolio, 1989) perspective a personal leadership style. Prevalent leadership t heories include for the purpose of our analysis Trait, Behavioral, Theories X and Y, Contingency, Transactional and Transformational approaches. I will borrow from aforementioned approaches, attributes identifiable in the behavior pattern found in our chosen subject of leadership to discriminate among leadership theories, to arrive at a leadership style conclusively. Among the people who were unknowingly practicing varying degrees of leadership styles when exhibiting a consistent behavior pattern in their community of practice, was my uncle George.A man born during the first quarter of the twentieth century right in the middle of the great depression, who learned from childhood the economic commitments of adulthood survival and the values of intangibles such as honor, respect, love for country and family unity. Self-taught and curious advanced the movie of life by taking shortcuts to opportunities immigrating to countries economically strong like the United States. Before marriage and after his mother death uncle George, the oldest son assumed a leadership position in his family looking after his sisters and a brother, a fina ncial burden that continued after marriage.It was during that period of his life that I met him and perceived from him a strong commanding persona, tall, blond, with blue eyes the look of someone bound to be somebody (Allport, 1961). Today, I associate this portrait with Type and Trait theories (Allport, 1966) and certainly enough the community of my uncle’s peers confirmed these theories by adding collectively some superiority to his looks and demeanor (Allport, 1966) making uncle George informal heir to some degree of charismatic power within their social group (House, 1977). My uncle was competitive but kind, friendly but respectful, gregarious beyond the limits of his kind, conservative but expressive, a self-appointed guardian of social justice but accommodating to self-interests. At this stage of his life, his leadership style was consistent in the community and at home featuring a democratic, participative, transactional leadership style with followers influenced by attributing charisma to perceived personality and physical traits (Burns, 1978; Allport, 1966; House, 1977).As a head of his own and of his fraternal family, his behavior was patriarchal a combination of authority outlining rights and duties to family members subject to economic constraints and life management risks with a sympathetic understanding of their potential for failures growing up. He walked this behavioral line during a growth stage of both families, maintaining a nourishing hand open to anyone in need of support and guidance. He was a contingency leader adapting to situations and using different leadership styles flexibly (Fiedler and Garcia, 1987).At work, my uncle George chose pharmaceutical sales, as a career it was a natural choice after working as a pharmacist assistant for years before the sales position move and distinguished himself with his gregarious personality, story telling, a contagious sense of humor combined with stage presence and a baritone singing voice. Armed with charisma and a nourishing personality this people oriented person (McGregor, 1960) began to enjoy the fruits of promotion, sharing financial gains with all family members, becoming the brother, the uncle and the relative to go to when in need. Uncle George inquired freely about everyone whereabouts, gave free advise and encourage dreams and achievements. Sometimes, introducing payback as the carrot and effort as the stick (Wren, 2004) for those he saw able of accomplishment and spiritual energy of trust in the Lord and Lady Luck to those he thought needed powerful forces to come to the rescue. No one was surprised when the funeral hall was flooded with family and friends, some workplace friends and others friends from uncle George’s personal wanderings when reaching out to others and from sharing loving helping hands to church parishioners (House, 1977).All those who knew him and he called friends were present at the funeral service to acknowledge a transforming personality trustworthy and loyal (Bowers Seashore, 1966) that grew in them to become a transformational leader (Bass, 1990). I was his first nephew, the first generation he was going to influence by example, modeling a role of an uncle and many times a father’s image. I continue to observe uncle George’s behavior as life went on confirming his consistency with family responsibilities. One example that comes to mind occurs when his son in-law, a lawyer, was divorcing his daughter and the settlement went to arbitration. I had convinced my uncle to invest in a real estate property to collect rent thinking in retirement income, which he did. His daughter needed financial assistance to hire legal representation and Uncle George sold his only investment and gave her daughter the funds she needed. This was the last piece of property he ever owned again and cost him to end up in subsidized housing until his last days.This inspirational example of self-denial is indicative of a transformational leader transcending self-interest for the benefit of a team member in crisis and in this case a family member (Bass Avolio, 1989). When he was dying of cancer, bedridden, in pain waiting to die, his daily apology was for the trouble he was causing those around him dispensing care while thanking God for his gift of life and joy of a family. Uncle George influenced my life from child hood to adulthood, my achieved dreams were his dreams seen through my eyes I felt he realized his dreamed business successes watching me attain mine. He was my inspiration to excel. In sum, my uncle George was indeed a transformational leader in situations demanding ethic and moral, self-denial, inspiration and commitment to others, (Bass Avolio, 1989). He was also a Contingency charismatic leader with transcendental ideas and referent power (Bass Avolio, 1989; French Raven, 1959) that moved followers to trust themselves. He was the kind of leader to have if trouble was around. He would have explained a transactional and transformational (Burns, 1978; Bass, 1985) aspect of the situation. I always knew where I stood with him but I knew he would not let me standing alone.Uncle George influenced the child, the adolescent and the adult in me by example in a successful leadership role in diverse situations that changed my perception of what a father was what an uncle could be and what a human being has the potential to become. The Louisiana Purchase Essay The Louisiana Purchase Essay was the purchase of the French province of Louisiana by the United States in 1803. The province stretched from the Mississippi River westward to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico northward to Canada, covering an area equal to that of the United States, prior to the purchase. Except for the Mississippi River on the east and Canada on the north, the boundaries were indefinite. The United States also claimed West Florida between the Mississippi and Perdido rivers as part of the purchase, but Spain denied the claim. As a result of the purchase, the port of New Orleans and the entire Mississippi system were secured for American shippers, and the country was free to expand toward the Pacific Ocean. In 1762, France had ceded Louisiana to Spain, but by the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso, (1800) the French had regained the area. Napoleon Bonaparte (the future Emperor Napoleon I) envisioned a great French empire in the New World, and he hoped to use the Mississippi Valley as a food and trade center to supply the island of Hispania, which was to be the heart of this empire. First, however, he had to restore French control of Hispania, where Haitian slaves under Toussaint L Ouverture had seized power (1801). In 1802, a large army sent by Napoleon under his brother-in-law, Charles Leclerc, arrived on the island to suppress the Haitian rebellion. Also in 1802, two acts were committed that President Thomas Jefferson, who was concerned about French intentions, regarded as hostile to the interests of the U.S. . French forces were sent to New Orleans and to Santo Domingo, Hispania (now the Dominican Republic), to quell a rebellion there. The other was the right of deposit, the privilege previously accorded U.S. merchants of depositing goods at New Orleans pending transshipment, was withdrawn. Jefferson thereupon sent the American statesman James Monroe to Paris to aid the American minister to France, Robert R. Livingston, in an attempt to affect one of four possible plans advantageous to the U.S. The plans are (1) to purchase of eastern and western Florida and New Orleans; (2) the purchase of New Orleans alone; (3) the purchase of land on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River to build an American port; or (4) the acquisition of perpetual rights of navigation and deposit. Despite some military success, the French lost thousands of soldiers, mainly to yellow fever, and Napoleon soon realized that Hispania must be abandoned. Without that island, he had little use for Louisiana. Facing renewed war with Great Britain, he could not spare troops to defend the territory; he needed funds, moreover, to support his military ventures in Europe. Accordingly, in April 1803 he offered to sell Louisiana to the United States. The price agreed on was $15 million, of which $11,250,000 was to be paid outright by the U.S. to France. The balance of $3,750,000 was to be paid by the U.S. to its citizens to satisfy their claims against France. When all of this news returned to Jefferson was ecstatic. At one stroke, the United States would double its size, an enormous tract of land would be open to settlement, and the free navigation of the Mississippi would be assured. At the time of purchase, Jefferson was concerned about the constitutionality of making a land acquisition without adding a covering amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The law of the land, however, did give the president treaty-making power, and Jefferson concluded that the practical benefits to the nation far outweigh the possible violation of the Constitution. Affirmative Action is a hot issue in the United States, with wide differences of opinion over the correct way to expand opportunity for people who have historically been discriminated against. With the philosophical difference behind the legal and political tensions is deep. One side wants a total rollback of affirmative action programs, making individual merit the only criterion for hiring and promotional considerations. While the other extreme wants affirmative action to be pushed until the racial makeup of all professions mirrors the racial makeup of US society exactly. While both these sides are to the greatest ends of the argument there needs to be an approach to come up with a medium. This could include laws to force companies to vigorously recruit and develop minorities for professional and managerial jobs. However, there should not be any outright quotas, which reserve a certain number of slots for particular minority groups. This will cause resentments and constitutional obs tacles down the road. The objective here is not to do away with affirmative action in one sweep, rather to seek out strategies to help promising minorities and match them with opportunities they have rightfully earned and deserve. Now, what does the law say? Although Title VII has an affirmative action component part of it, most regulations stem from a requirement imposed by Executive Order 11246. There are a lot of misconceptions about affirmative action and what laws companies actual have to follow. One is that all companies are required to adhere to the laws under affirmative action, this is not the case. Executive Order 11246 states that once a company enters into a contract with a federal governmental agency that exceeds $10,000 it must abide by the affirmative action rules and regulations. These regulations include, but are not limited to, the following: to post in a conspicuous place, available to all applicants, provisions of the nondiscrimination clause; include in contractor's advertisements that all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, gender, or national origin; include statements of these obligations to all subcontractors; and furnish all informa tion and reports to the Secretary of Labor for purposes of investigation to ascertain compliance with the executive order and its regulations. In addition to the above regulations if a corporation enters into a contract of $50,000 or more additional requirements are put in place. A Corporation must develop a written action plan within 120 days of the beginning of a governmental contract. They must also perform a workforce analysis, which must indicate how many women and minorities are in job categories ranging from unskilled workers to managerial employees. These are the basic rules and regulations companies and corporations must follow in order to be within the compliance of the law. There have been several major court decisions that have helped define the application of the statutes and regulations. One of the biggest and earliest cases was that of Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. This case was not against an individual's employer rather against a university. Bakke applied to Davis for two consecutive years but was rejected on both occasions. In both years, applicants with lower scores than Bakke were admitted due to a special admit program. Davis had a program that says applicants who are not of minority status are totally excluded from a specific percentage of the seats in the entering class. When the State's distribution of benefits hinges on the color of a person skin, that individual is entitled to a demonstration that the challenged classification is essential to promote a tangible state interest. For this reason the court's judgment was that Davis' special admission program was invalid under the Fourteenth Amendment. Another case, that di d deal with the employer-employee relationship, was United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO v. Weber. In this case a white employee sued because his employer adopted a voluntary affirmative action plan reserving for black employees fifty percent of the openings in a training program. The Wired writer was using the word in the sense of â€Å"to take away by percolation.† Related to leach is the word leak, â€Å"to let water in or out.† It may seem that the figurative sense of leak to mean allowing secret matters come to public attention must be a 20th century innovation, but it’s not. The free rider was not too happy with this group decision, but realized if they would have participated, that someone else may have actually volunteered to make the presentation. Based on the position that this person was interviewing for and that they are coming to an interview dressed this way, they were non-verbally telling me by their personal appearance, that this is what I should expect of them if they were to come to work for me. I truly had a hard time focusing on any of their responses as I couldnt understand how they thought this type of appearance was acceptable to be hired for any type of position in an establishment where they would be dealing with the public. Needless to say, this person was not hired to work at my restaurant. An instance of observing nonverbal communication was during a mandatory meeting that was called at work and during the meeting one particular individual stood out as you could hear him making little snide remarks about what the speaker was saying, and then used the facial expression of rolling his eyes. This individual also would use posture such as slouching in his chair for awhile then he pulled out his cell phone and started to text. The meeting was actually very informative about a new product the company was developing and was asking for everyones input on ideas for marketing. Since this individual was not listening during the meeting, in the end when we all got back to our desks, he had to go around and ask other co-workers what it was he was supposed to do. Most of the workers told him he would need to go ask his supervisor. Whether he did or not, no one knew, nor did anyone know if he turned in his idea. He was around for about another 2 months, and then we heard he had found another job and wouldnt be back. â€Å"Good communication skills can help you in both your personal and professional life. While verbal and written communication skills are important, research has shown that nonverbal behaviors make up a large percentage of our daily interpersonal communication†. (http://psychology.about.com/od/nonverbalcommunication/tp/nonverbaltips.htm) Nonverbal communication has the potential of sending out the wrong message, whether its misinterpreted, or if what you say doesnt match your actions. Describe the measures that help team members resolve conflict. It is inevitable that at some point in ones professional career they will be on a team where conflict arises. There are numerous reasons for conflict: lack of clarity, decisions have already been made on their own and are unwilling to discuss any further, different values, past history/personalities, or one believes there is completion for some type of resource. There are measures to help team members resolve conflicts — Proaction, communication, openness, research, flexibility, fair play, and alliance. Here are descriptions of each of the conflict resolutions as mentioned: 1) Proaction is when you work out, deal with, a minor conflict before it erupts into a major conflict; 2) Communication is needed to resolve a conflict. This is accomplished by getting those directly involved to communicate to resolve the conflict; 3) Openness is getting all feelings out in the open, and then the main issue at hand can be dealt with; 4) Research is the need to get the facts for the problem before being able to determine any solutions for the problem; 5) Flexibility is being able to be open-minded. Dont let anyones stubbornness get in the way of them being able to consider other solutions to the problem; 6) Fair play is not letting anyone hide behind the rules to avoid getting a fair solution; and 7) Alliance is fighting together as opponents of the outside force, rather than fighting against each other. In order to achieve a win-win solution, teams must be aware of, and learn how to keep destructive conflict from diverting their focus and energy, and also how both sides can satisfy their goals, at least to an extent.

The Effects of Tobacco Use Many people are addicted to the use of tobacco and do not realize the effect that it has on their body. Tobacco contains many harmful chemicals that can damage your heart, lungs, and nervous system. Tobacco companies deliberately put these chemicals in cigarette’s to get us addicted to their products; never less this has been an ongoing controversy for many years. Therefore smoking cigarettes is very addictive and a habit that is very hard to brake.Smoking can cause lung disease, cancer, emphysema, and death. Smoking cigarettes can even cause our skin to look prematurely old and cause wrinkles. People do not realize what harm they are doing to their bodies by inhaling tobacco, therefore should visit with a health professional regarding their options. One very harmful chemical that is in tobacco is carbon monoxide. First carbon monoxide when mixed with other harmful chemicals like tar and inhaled thru the lungs is very dangerous; and as a result can h ave adverse reaction.Consequently researchers have even found in recent years that due to inhaling carbon monoxide thru cigarettes into the lungs can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, as result can lead to stroke or death. Second, harmful effects of carbon monoxide poisoning thru smoking cigarettes is also irreversible. Therefore the damage is permanent and the body will not naturally heal itself. Most Physicians will agree that carbon monoxide poisoning does damage to the entire body and will encourage patients to quit.There are many program’s available today for our youth and for people that are addicted to tobacco. Our schools have program’s informing our kids about the harmful effects of tobacco use. There are many products on the market to help people get over the addiction and to help quit smoking; such as gum, nicotine patches, and another alternative is Chantix, a prescription available thru the Doctor. There are prescription medications available today that wil l work with the receptors in your brain to reject the urge to smoke or the desire for nicotine.Another option is counseling and, sometimes talking to a professional can help with addiction. Many people will not quit until they have made up their mind to; or witness someone that they love suffer from a disease such as lung cancer. A person can even visit with their Doctor about trying to quit. Lung cancer and lung disease are the top two illnesses that are the direct effect from smoking cigarettes. Lung cancer is not curable and the mortality rate is higher than those that survive that are diagnosed.It is estimated that more people die from smoking a cigarette than drug and alcohol use combined. Lung disease is a terrible illness to have to endure; some people even have to have their lungs drained to release the fluid that is built up enabling them to breath. More and more people today have to live with the use of oxygen, a device that pumps air into the lungs and helps the lung to f unction normally. Tobacco use is very harmful; we not only put our own bodies in danger but others around us. Second hand smoke is dangerous and can affect those that do not even smoke at all.If an individual is going to smoke they need to be informed of all of the harmful effects that it can cause to their body, the environment, and those around them. Therefore the public needs to be educated about tobacco and society needs to be aware of all the harmful effects as well. Making the decision to quit is the first step in the process to better health, second visiting with your Doctor or healthcare provider will set the path to being happier and living a much more productive and healthier life.

Real Life Situation

My Real Life Situation Back home, I was working as a teaching assistant ,and still is, with limited authorities. At the end of the semester, we usually have the finals week. Our department starts to fall apart as usual, the schedule was a mess; in one day we have 4 exams and on the other day none. It’s a typical end of the semester when all this madness happens , and we struggle every semester to find a solution. This usually happens because of our head department lack of attention or lack of management skills due to his soft personality.I talked to him and asked him if I can step up and fix it once and for all by bringing a standard test schedule that can last for many semesters where no proctors/students will face any troubles in terms of knowing their schedule and the classes . after a long discussion with the head department, he finally decided to give me his permission. I knew that this was my chance to show him my sense of leadership. So I started to define my strategy a nd how am I going to solve this problem.I put a list for all courses and the name of professors whom are teaching it, then ,I put a second list with all the classes rooms In the building, furthermore, I put a third list with all the proctors names that we have in staff . Finaly , I organized the schedule besd upon the priority and student /proctors necessity. I gathered the staff and show them the new changes in a theme that show how simple the procedure will be in the future if we followed the new enhanced schedule. ven thought we had some disagreements in terms of proctors duties and dates, I managed to solve them and at the end every one know his responsibility and was pleased with the solution . My university is stil using my planned schedule and never made any changes in the past three years which means that my plans worked flawlessly . In this dilemma I used a persuasive technique to persuade the committee about how importnant is to have a standerd agenda for future years whic h can help students to prepare ahead to their tests and for proctors to know their duties upfront .I explained also to the committee that I added a pack up plan for proctos in case one of them had to take a day off or missed a test day for personal excuse by easy switch from one proctor to another which defintly worked to my benefit and their agreement. In conclusion, I learned that Good listening is essential for good management so listening to others opinions and suggestions will help you to reach a full agreement thus gaining the respect from others because of paying attention to their needs.
